I teach to mastery in my classes, and I will evaluate in class performance, not just participation.  I will use the following criteria to assess in class mastery of musical concepts:

    Kindergarten and 1st grade

3 – consistently demonstrates good performance – sings with appropriate head tone, misses no more than 3 pitches, keeps steady beat with no more than 3 breaks, holds ostinato rhythm with no more than 3 breaks

2 – does not consistently demonstrate good performance – sings/speaks with several breaks, misses more than 3 pitches, breaks steady beat more than 3 times, breaks ostinato more than 3 times

1 – needs more time to develop this skill – speaks more often than sings, sings directionally but not necessarily on pitch, oscillates between steady beat and rhythm, cannot hold an ostinato independently from rhythm

    Grades 2-6

4 – excellent - sings with appropriate head tone, misses no more than 2 pitches, keeps steady beat with no breaks, holds ostinato rhythm with no breaks

3 – satisfactory - sings with appropriate head tone, misses no more than 3 pitches, keeps steady beat with no more than 3 breaks, holds ostinato rhythm with no more than 3 breaks

2 – needs improvement - sings/speaks with several breaks, misses more than 3 pitches, breaks steady beat more than 3 times, breaks ostinato more than 3 times

1 – unsatisfactory - speaks more often than sings, sings directionally but not necessarily on pitch, oscillates between steady beat and rhythm, cannot hold an ostinato independently from rhythm
