Students and Teachers at Southmoore High School have organized the following
school and student organizations for the 2012-2013 school year. This notification
letter provides a listing of student organizations to parents/guardians and serves
to inform you of the particular student organizations that have formed this year.
These student organizations may also be found on the schools’ website. Please be
aware that parents/guardians may prohibit their student’s participation in
a particular student organization.
 
Parents/guardians shall be responsible for preventing their student from
participating in a club or organization in which permission is withheld.
Parents/guardians shall also be responsible for retrieving their student
from attendance at a club or organization in which permission is withheld.
A club or organization is not prohibited from meeting if a student who is
not authorized to be in the club or organization is present at a meeting.
 

SCHOOLCLUBS

Academic Team / Deborah Chavez, Belinda Craig, & Macie Viets – Sponsors

The purpose of this organization is to compete in quiz bowl competitions sponsored by OSSAA and universities.  Students will compete in a fast-paced jeopardy like game. Questions will cover science, math, social studies, sports, literature and other electives. In addition, students may compete at scholastic competitions that are sponsored by various state and private universities during the spring semester.

Southmoore Book Club / Michelle Grogan & Mary Pelton - Sponsors

The purpose of the book club is to develop a love of reading and discuss literature read with the members.

Business Professionals of America – Susan Smoot – Sponsor

Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields. The Workplace Skills Assessment Program (WSAP) prepares students to succeed and assesses real-world business skills and problem solving abilities in finance, management, IT and computer applications. It is BPA’s showcase program and facilitates students demonstrating their career skills at regional, state and national conferences in 72 competitive event

DECA / Carla Stanley - Sponsor

The purpose of DECA is to develop emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in Marketing, Finance, Hospitality and Management. Our logo is the DECA Diamond which signifies that student members leverage their DECA experience to become academically prepared, community oriented, professional responsible, experienced leaders. Only students enrolled in one of the Marketing classes are able to join the Southmoore DECA chapter.

Future Journalists of America / Teresa Brown - Sponsor

FJA is an honorary association for the staffs of the SaberCat Legend andSmilodon. The purpose of these classes is to produce outstanding publications which document life at Southmoore by adhering to the highest journalistic standards.

Southmoore Junior Classics League (JCL) / Darin Davis - Sponsor

The purpose of the Southmoore Junior Classics League is to advance the study and appreciation of classical studies in the Moore Public School District and the State of Oklahoma and to also gain and promote a deeper understanding of classical history and languages at Southmoore and the surrounding community.

National Honor Society /Donna Bronson & Darin Davis-Sponsors

The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

Science Club / Darla Wyatt & Macie Viets-Sponsors

The purpose of the Science Club is to raise funds for student lead, independent research associated with the science seminar. The club raises money for research projects and organizes trips to research institutions.

Student Council / Brook Lehew & David Burton -Sponsors

The purpose of Student Council is to serve the school and its student in a multitude of different capacities from creating opportunities for student to get involved in school, to fostering school spirit, to helping families in need, and community outreach

Theatre Club /Kay Baugus-Sponsors

Southmoore Theatre Club (formerly Drama Club) serves to enhance the drama experience for students enrolled in the Drama class, enhance and allow students not enrolled in Drama to be involved in the drama activities, and to promote school spirit within the fine arts. Theatre Club also promotes community service and develops skills that can be used in school, at work, and at home and in social situations. Students may share this knowledge with family, co-workers eventually their own children. SHS Theatre Club encourages students to strive for artistic excellence by performing in plays, musicals, senior directed one acts, One Act competition, Film Festival, Talent Show, Dinner Theater, and more.

Youth in Government / T. Seabolt, M. McConville. & L. Crawford - Sponsors

The Youth in Government program is a national program that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Students from every corner of the U.S. have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and practice democracy. Teens from across every state meet in their local Youth in Government groups throughout the year to discuss and debate issues that affect citizens of their state and to propose legislation. The program culminates with teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature.

Family Career & Community Leaders of America / S. Johnson & A. Mathis-Sponsors

FCCLA is the Career Tech Student Organization affiliated with Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Our mission is "To promote personal growth and leadership development."

Hip-Hop Club / Rachel Laib - Sponsor

Hip-Hop club's purpose is to teach and practice multiple dance styles such as breaking, pop-locking, and crumping. The main goal is to give those who are interested in hip-hop dancing a place to learn and practice.

Interact Club / Deborah Meget - Sponsor

Interact is the student division of Rotary International. The club focuses on leadership skills and volunteerism in both the school and surrounding community.

Model United Nations / L. Echard, W. Green, & D. Burton – Sponsors

Southmoore’s Model UN promotes the understanding of the United Nations, current world issues, and the international relations while promoting debate, public speaking and research skills.

Multicultural Club / Jennifer Castellanos - Sponsor

The purpose of MCC is to learn about other customs and cultures. We study a different culture each month and we create activities that are customary to that culture. Also we go out to eat at a nearby restaurant that serves that culture’s food.

Native American Student Association /Stacey Ferguson - Sponsor

NASA is a student led organization that aims to educate students on Native American cultural opportunities.
