Degrees and Certifications:
Hello Sabercat Parents & Guardians, and welcome! I am glad you took the time to stop by my webpage to learn more about the classes that I teach here at Southmoore High School.
I truly love the subjects I teach. But most of all, I love your teenager too! I am always very excited when school is in session, and bored when we're not. My hope is that your child will rediscover the wonder and excitement they first felt about learning new things, and enjoy their experience in the process. My goal is the same as our school: to Create Avenues To Success.
Astronomy 1 / Astronomy 2 - In the first semester, upperclassmen will examine the experimentation procedures of the scientific world, the processes and structural organization of objects in the known Universe, the history of Astronomy, Cosmology,, and stellar evolution. In the second semester, we will examine all of the objects in our solar system, the history of space flight, and we will work on a semester-long project called "The Mission to Mars". I hope to rekindle their scientific curiosity or fan the flames of their passion to understand the vast wonder and mystery of the Universe around them. I hope to (and probably will) blow their minds! =)
Meteorology - In the second semester, we will examine the experimentation procedures of the scientific world, the processes and structural organization of weather systems, climate around the World, and the role weather plays in our lives. My goal is to develop a useful understanding of the awesome power & complexity of our planet's atmospheric conditions.
Earth Science - In this class, upperclassmen will be introduced to the fascinating world of non-living systems on Earth (along with some Astronomy). We focus on four main areas: Meteorology, Astronomy, Oceanography, and Geology. I have taught this subject for the majority of my career as a teacher, and I believe that what your student will learn is interesting and relevant to their lives.
I also look to teach your child about how to be successful as a student, prepare for their post high school education, and to help in their growth as a person. I truly love the subjects I teach. (I literally have been studying Astronomy since I was a 7 year old child) But most of all, I love your teenager too! I am always very excited when school is in session, and bored when we're not. My hope is that your child will rediscover the wonder and excitement they first felt about learning new things, and enjoy their experience in the process. My goal is the same as our school: to Create Avenues To Success. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please e-mail me. I will return your e-mail or call you back as soon as possible.
Correcting assignments: If a student makes a legitimate attempt at answering a question on a daily assignment, then the student will be able to erase the incorrect answer and rewrite the correct answer for full credit. If a student does not make a legitimate attempt at answering a question on a daily assignment, they can fill in the answer for 1/3 credit.
Late assignments: A student will be able to turn in late work within limited time, but you will not be able to receive extra credit points. Work turned in 1 day after the due date will receive 50% of whatever is earned for the assignment. If it is turned in 2 days later up until the day of the test, it will receive 25% of what is earned. After the Unit test it will not receive any credit (0%).
Exceptions to late work policy: Of course any student with an excused absence will not have a zero posted in the grade book. They will simply not have a posted grade until the assignment is graded. It is in the student’s best interest to take the late work policy seriously. Late work can pile up quickly & it will impact the student’s ability to understand the material.
Retesting: A student may retake any test, for any reason. A student may retake a test once, and I count the higher of the two grades. Retesting is not a district policy, teachers are not required to do this. I offer this as a courtesy to my students.
This is what I believe a good classroom environment looks like, and I hope that you will contribute to this kind of classroom too!
