• The Point Thesis Statement:

What’s the point to what you’re writing about?  The main idea?

    Hook Hook Samples:

Hook 1: a question    Who could have imagined that a teenager whose father is killed, whose only method of providing food for her family is by hunting with a bow and arrow, and who hates cats would one day save her sister and then the world?  Suzanne Collins did just this when she wrote, “The Hunger Games.”

Hook 2: a bold statement  My grandpa hung the moon.  Well, not literally, but he did so much for me, that I can assume he can do almost anything.

Hook 3: a quote  “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”  John F. Kennedy’s quote has inspired me to enlist in the armed forces when I am old enough.

Hook 4: a fact  "More than 1 in 5 children is at risk of hunger. Among African-Americans and Latinos, it’s 1 in 3" (dosomething.org).
