Please be practicing sight words with your child every day!
Kindergarten Sight Words Information:
-Definition: Sight words, often also called high frequency sight words, are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight so that they can automatically recognize these words in print within three seconds without having to use any strategies to decode (such as sounding out).
-Practice the Rainbow Words in order by color. Here is the order to practice by color: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. Do not move up a color list until the student has mastered all words in the color in any random order. Always change the order of words when working sight words.
-Always review mastered sight words regularly so students do not lose any words.
-Practice about 5 unknown words with your child at a time. Showing them too many unknown words can overwhelm them and lead to frustration. This will cause the student to shut down and learning cannot occur. Once those 5 are mastered you can move on to 5 other unknown words.
-Make learning sight words fun! Play games using flashcards to make student's learning more engaging and more meaningful. Sight words are extremely important so we need all students to want to learn sight words!
