Back to School Information August 2020
Here is a video of the Orientation presentation we will be going over with students.
Here is a copy of the same letter that was mailed out to parents.
On behalf of the entire Southridge staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2020-21 school year. I hope this letter finds you healthy and eager for the year ahead. To say this year will be different is an understatement, but I can assure you that we are dedicated to providing a great education in a healthy, safe environment. Each day will bring about new challenges, but we are committed to partnering with you to work through those challenges in order to have a safe and successful year.
Our traditional back to school activities will look somewhat different this year. The information normally shared at orientation will be provided in this document. Also, included you will find the following:
- Student schedule
- Map of school (to locate your classes)
- Drop-off/Pick-up procedures
- Bell Schedule
If you have not reviewed the MPS Return to Learn document, please take time to acquaint yourself on the district website. Here at Southridge, we have worked very hard to implement additional procedures that will allow more opportunity for social distancing while at school.
Here is some Southridge specific information:
All students will receive a Chromebook within the first few weeks of school. Students will take their Chromebooks home every evening to complete assignments, review online materials, etc. It is imperative that students bring the Chromebook fully charged and ready to go each day. Every class will use the technology as part of the instruction daily.
Masks or face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are required for all students and faculty members in the secondary schools. These items will fall under the school dress code policy and must be school appropriate.
Proof of Residence
Students are required to turn in one proof of residence on the first day of school. This should be a copy of a current (June 2020 or later) utility bill (gas, water, or electric) or home mortgage or lease agreement.
All students are required to wear an ID at all times while at school. There is no charge for the first ID and lanyard. There is a $10.00 fee for any replacement ID’s. Please check the MPS Student Handbook online for the ID Policy. Students will receive their ID’s on the first day of school.
The district has provided for a full-time nurse at each school. Our nurse is Brooke Matchen. If you have any health-related concerns, please reach out to her directly at firstname.lastname@example.org after August 10th.
If you are a car rider, see the enclosed drop-off/pick-up procedures. If you need bus information, it can be found on the MPS website. As noted on the MPS Return to Learn document, masks are required to be worn on the bus.
Every Southridge student will be required to purchase an agenda for $10.00. Agendas will be utilized in every class to assist students with organization. You can either pay for it online on our website and pick it up in the media center on the first day of school, or you can bring your money to school and buy it in person in the media center.
Since students will not be using lockers this year (per MPS Return to Learn document), they will be allowed to carry backpacks throughout the school day. This will allow them to carry the necessary supplies and Chromebook to every class.
For the first day of school, students should plan on bringing paper and writing utensil. Teachers will provide students with a list of supplies needed for each class. We will not be sharing supplies this year, so each student will carry his/her supplies in the backpack to every class. Teachers are being mindful of the amount of supplies needed, since students will not have a locker.
Students have three options for lunch.
Cafeteria- The menu for the cafeteria is posted online monthly. You may pay in person or parents can pay online. Breakfast = $1.45 and Lunch= $2.90. Students will eat inside the cafeteria.
Student Store- Students may purchase food from various outside vendors including Eagle One Pizza, Taco Bueno and others. Many more food items are also sold in the student store. Students will eat in the old gym.
Bring your lunch- Students may bring a lunch from home and eat in the old gym.
For this year, parents may not drop off lunch for students or eat lunch with students at school. On special occasions, you are welcome to check out your child to take them to lunch.
As indicated in the MPS Return to Learn document, drinking fountains will not be used, but water fill stations will be accessible to students. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle, so they may stay hydrated. At Southridge, all water bottles must be transparent and have a lid.
How to Stay Informed
We share information in a variety of ways:
School marquee, Automated Dialer, Emails and Texts, Weekly e-newsletter, Peachjar, Social Media (Twitter= @Southridge_JHS), Daily announcements, Parent Portal, Canvas, and Teacher websites. PTSA utilizes Instagram and Facebook.
We are so excited about the first day of school, and we hope you are too! Upon arrival to school (after 7:00 a.m.), all students will enter through Door 8. If you are eating breakfast, they will begin serving at 7:10 in the cafeteria. If you are not eating breakfast, 8th graders will report to the new gym and 7th graders will report to the old gym. Students will remain in the gym until the 7:30 bell, at which time they will be released to go to class. See enclosed map for location of gyms and cafeteria. Throughout each hour, we will conduct our back to school orientation for students to help them feel more comfortable at Southridge and familiarize them with day to day procedures.
